You could say I was taken a bit back when I walked into my first advertising agency and saw a fully stocked bar.
I don’t know about you, but my idea of a corporate workplace did not include a bar…or free cateered food, or unlimited vacation days.
Sounds like a dream, right? Wrong. Welcome to the Advertising Industry.
With perks like that, I don’t know why anyone else would desire to work anywhere other than an ad agency. However, with all of the perks, comes major responsibility and tradeoff.
Most agencies are centered around the idea of “Work Hard, Play Hard” (a classic Wiz Khalifa motto turned hit song). Long hours, demanding clients and tight corners with coworkers are just a few of the less glamorous aspects of agency life.
Furthermore, the advertising industry isn’t for everyone. Constantly being critiqued and having to prove yourself and talent is a drawback for many. Personally, I thrive on the idea of collaboration and having to constantly innovate my work to stay current with clients.
So give me the long nights, challenging clients, and lack of sleep. There is no other industry that offers the ability to create and dream without borders. The sky is the limit when it comes to creating, and I am enthuastically awaiting the day for when I can contribute ideas that will shape the industry.
Fine. I’ll admit it.
The free breakfast might be the deal breaker, too.
